Talking with my School

Collier Primary School recognises that parents play a pivotal role in their child’s education, growth and development. Children learn from example, so it is critical for all adults to model respectful and responsible behaviours. Educating children is a process that involves a partnership between home and school, so it is vital clear processes are in place to ensure effective and positive working relationships are maintained with all key stakeholders.

We are lucky to have a wonderful school community, an active P&C and School Council. Parents play an important role in advocating for our students, and we value the individual strengths and insights of all community members.

Shared Responsibility for Safety

We all share a responsibility for providing a safe, supportive and productive environment, free from bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence. Parents and carers, and other visitors to our school, support safety by ensuring communication and conduct at school and school activities is respectful. We all have the right to feel safe and be safe at school.

Partnership in Education

Connect and Respect is designed to enable us to continue to work together in the best interests of our children. This includes:

  • When and how to contact the school
  • What you can expect from schools
  • The behaviours that interfere with teaching and learning

You can view the Connect and Respect resources by click the 2025 Conversations & Communication guidelines above.

Key Expectations

Parents and visitors at Collier Primary School are expected to:

  • Treat all community members with respect and dignity – This aligns with the Department of Education’s commitment to teaching, learning and working environments where all individuals are treated with respect and dignity
  • Model appropriate behaviour at all times within the school setting
  • Follow proper communication channels – approach the classroom teacher first for classroom issues, then the K-2 or 3-6 Deputy Principal if needed. If these avenues have been exhausted, an appropriate amount of time has been given to implement any change/agreements and the issue is not resolved, the next step is to contact the school principal.
  • Support school values and policies actively
  • Ensure respectful communication and conduct at school and school activities, between students, parents and staff.
  • Work collaboratively in the best interests of children

Unwelcome Behaviours

The following behaviours are not appropriate at Collier Primary School:

  • Disruptive behaviour which interferes with the day to day running of a classroom, office area or any other part of the school grounds
  • Using loud and/or offensive language or displaying aggression towards staff, students or other parents
  • Threatening harm or the use of physical aggression towards another adult or child
  • Approaching other children directly – Under no circumstance is a parent or guardian to approach another child whilst they are in the care of the school to discuss or discipline them because of their actions towards their own child
  • Bullying, harassment, discrimination or violence of any kind
  • Gossip, rumour-spreading, or sharing confidential information about students, families, or staff
  • Breaching student privacy or confidentiality – sharing personal information about other children

Social Media Guidelines

Social media platforms including the school Facebook page and WhatsApp groups are positive and welcoming platforms for school information and celebration. We are very proud to support the P&C in connecting parents and forming positive community relationships. through WhatsApp. These are not the appropriate forum to raise concerns. The WhatsApp guidelines developed in conjunction between the P&C and school outline the expectations of use.

Parents can raise concerns through appropriate school channels listed in the parent handbook. This ensures issues are addressed fairly, appropriately and effectively for all concerned. Gossip and informal discussions about school matters with other parents is not an appropriate way to resolve concerns, it does not provide an opportunity to quickly resolve a concern and has the potential to harm the school community.

Please ensure you are consistently implementing the WhatsApp Guidelines for parents to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Consequences

Inappropriate behaviours at Collier Primary School should always be reported to the principal for review. This ensures we keep a safe and supportive environment for our whole school community. Concerns can be heard and a resolution reached. In repetitive or severe situations, the principal may make the decision to prohibit the offending person/s from entering the school grounds to safeguard the school community.

Keeping our community safe and our school environment positive and respectful is important to us. We thank you for your support.
